Natalie Portman is one of those young actresses that gossip doesn’t seem to stick to, no matter what. This is refreshing to witness while we have to wade through the murky waters of Britney, Lindsay and other young stars her age who haven’t got it quite as together as she does. Her acting resume is also quite expansive, playing everything from Anne Frank, to a young assassin, to a queen. And let’s not forget her Harvard psychology degree.

Now on her growing list of achievements comes, Shoe Designer”. Yes, young Natalie was frustrated with her shoe options (she is vegan, therefore she will not use anything with animal products or by-products, although she is not as strict with her diet) so she came up with her own.

Working closely with Te Casan, she has come up with a line of feminine and classic shoes that most any lady would adore. These shoes are made of alternative materials and are in the $200 (average) range. 5% of this sticker price will go to charity.

Natalie has also lent her time to other causes, such as educating less developed countries on micro-financing for which she traveled to Ecuador, Uganda and Guatemala.

What makes a shoe eco-friendly?

There are many factors that will contribute to a shoe being “green”. You can take into consideration who made the shoe (did it involve child labor? Sweat shops?) and how far it had to travel to get to your hands (thus increasing its impact or “carbon footprint”). Next time you are shoe shopping, try to find shoes that are made of more natural material and use water-based glue.

And by the way… 11 Days left ’til Earth Day!
