Leonardo DiCaprio’s a busy boy

Apr 6th, 2008 by carisse |

Oh Leonardo. Personally, I first saw him turn in a solid performance in 1996’s Marvin’s Room. It was then I said to myself, “The boy can act.”

He also starred in other “respectable” films such as “The Basketball Diaries” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” until he landed the role of Jack in “Titanic“. Teenaged girls all over the world rejoiced! Since then, it seems he’s been on some sort of crusade to prove that he is more than the guy who sank to the bottom of the sea in the name of love.

If so, then this NEW crusade he is on is certainly worthy of declaring a “Love Leonardo Forever” day. He’s busy with “11th Hour”, (an award-winning documentary sort of like Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth”) where he served as writer, narrator and director. The film focuses on the effects of global warming, and explores topics such as human thought and environmental justice. The DVD is even available in recyclable, biodegradable packaging. Also impressive is the list of experts he pulled together to contribute to the documentary, including Mikhail Gorbachev and Stephen Hawking.

Quite a serious endeavor. He may be cute, but he’s not making pa-cute, friends!

Other than this film, he put together the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation in 1998 to promote environmental issues. He is also known for zipping around in his hybrid car (a Toyota Prius). Lately, he made news for moving into an eco-friendly apartment that has solar paneling and a 24-hour fresh filtered air system, among other things.

So is he just a pretty face? Definitely not. In fact, he has this to say: “Don’t let anyone turn back the clock. We’re not the ones who’ve run out of time…let’s all pledge ourselves to stand in solidarity…for the next round of battles on behalf of our planet.(from his 2005 speech at the Forces of Nature Benefit).

Let’s join hands with Leo! (You know you want to…)

Sign up on his website, or purchase the dvd of the 11th Hour (preferably from a legitimate source, friends!) and have a movie night with your amigos and amigas. Sometimes, all it takes is awareness, so spread the word!
