Musician Jack Johnson grew up on the island of Oahu, first learning how to play the guitar at age 14. Living on the islands introduced him to the joys of surfing, and in the beginning his fan base was primarily composed of those who thrive on being in the barrel of a wave.

His music is refreshing to hear in this sea of emo-rock and bass thumping club anthems. A visit to his website though, will show you that he’s more than just about feel-good tunes and breezy ditties that make you think of the sun, sand and sea.

Jack Johnson and his wife put up the Kokua Hawaii Foundation, which actively visits schools to educate young kids about the environment. On his website, you can sign up for the All At Once community, where you can discuss issues, explore other charities, and network with other individuals who are also passionate about the environment.

Apart from his personal organizations, Mr. Johnson supports a host of other charities that cater to the environment, some of which include the Surfrider Foundation, Live Earth and the Australia-based ActNow.

“Well I know some people’s they got a little less than nothing
But still find some to spare
And other people got more than they could use
But they don’t share…”

Jack Johnson, “Middleman”

Thanks for reminding us that we can all do our share. Surf’s up, Jack.

Want to participate in a local non-profit? Here’s an update on the BYOB Group from Los Banos.
Recently we featured the efforts of UPLB-based BYOB. It is encouraging to note that they are still fighting the good fight in their local community, having put up the “Pumapel Ka!” campaign. Check it out at their website and be inspired!
