Get a free bike from Dave Matthews!

Apr 7th, 2008 by carisse |

Well, you had to be in Virginia to get one.

The boys of DMB have been known as staunch supporters of the environment for a while now, but it’s heartening to know that they’re pretty creative about supporting the earth (such as “scattering” bikes all over Charlottesville, Virginia as a means to encourage people to use low-cost, zero emission transportation. I want one, Dave!)

They also have “One Sweet Whirled” – an ice cream flavor distributed by the fun people at Ben & Jerry’s. (The proceeds of which go to education efforts on global warming, one lick at a time. The site’s pretty fun to navigate, I spent almost an hour exploring it!) Ironically, while on tour a few years ago, their bus reportedly dumped some of their…ahem…”raw sludge” onto a river and ended up landing on a riverboat below where some tourists were enjoying a day in the sun. Eek. The band made up for it by donating some money to help clean up the mess, and since they have such a sterling reputation for taking care of the environment I guess fans have let this sludge incident slide.

The Dave Matthews Band has also helped raise around $4 million for various causes (which of course, includes the environment) through its Bama Works Fund. They are also committed to off-setting their carbon emissions from multi-city tours they engage in and have participated in tree planting efforts.

Keep it clean like Dave and the boys.
Instead of adding to the junk in your trunk, set aside a day (or two, depending on the need) where you clean out whatever it is that has accumulated in your room, your house, your car, or…your life. Less clutter leads to a clearer mind, and we like that.

Where it is possible, recycle or re-use. And those that you really don’t need anymore, seek to donate them first before just throwing it all away.

Countdown says: 15 days ’til Earth Day! Woohoo!
