Alicia Silverstone: Clueless…not!

“Ugh, AS IF!!!” Yes, out of anything else I could have remembered from 1995’s movie, “Clueless”, this is the line that stands out in my memory. Go figure.
Alicia Silverstone’s character in that movie (Cher) may have been portrayed as a popular, slightly off-kilter, self-indulgent bubblehead (yet also quite charming) daddy’s girl, but Ms. Silverstone (or Mrs. Christopher Jarecki nowadays) is thankfully quite different off-screen. Alicia, who lives in Southern California, is said to tend to her own organic garden and has a soft spot for stray animals (dogs, in particular). In fact, she has identified herself with PETA; she released an official statement where she says,
I’ve been vegan for 10 years, and it’s the single-most important and helpful decision I have ever made. Physically, the effect has been amazing. Once I went vegan, I lost the weight I wanted to lose, my nails were stronger, and my skin was glowing. I feel great, and I look better now than I did 11 years ago.
Being vegan truly is the secret to my life’s joy and peace. I feel physically and spiritually better than I could have ever imagined knowing that I am doing everything I can to reduce animal suffering with simple lifestyle choices like being vegan, never wearing any products made from animals (like wool and leather), and buying only from companies that NEVER test their products or ingredients on animals.

In fact, she came out with a video that was called, “the sexiest vegetarian advertisement” to date.
Alicia, in my memory, first came onto the scene as an Aerosmith chick, appearing in a total of three videos for that band, including one with lead singer Steven Tyler’s daughter, Liz. This led to her getting cast in Clueless, and later on, as the much talked about Batgirl. Hollywood roles aside, Alicia lives up to her vegan lifestlye as she makes sure to use only organic cotton and other eco-friendly fabrics, has solar panels and energy-efficient light bulbs installed in her house, and yes, she drives a Toyota Prius. Mmmhm, just like Leonardo, someone she supposedly used to date. Such a small world, this Hollywood.
Now you certainly don’t have to go the vegan way, but we can always incorporate more earth-friendly choices in our diet and lifestyle. At your next visit to the make-up or beauty counter, why not explore the organic section? Brands such as Jason and Burt’s Bees are always reliable. Gone are the days when going natural meant having to put something that resembled (and smelled like) mud on your face, or your hair… or just about anywhere. These days, organic beauty products smell great, work really well, and don’t leave you looking like a tree.
Is it really 4 days left ’til Earth Day???
